Grantland Design, a small speciality jewelry design shop, focuses primarily on hand-forged earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets as well as handcrafted scarf rings and dog collars made from recycled leather belts. I also have a line of hand-forged brass and copper dog tags for mixed breed dogs. And, when the mood strikes, I also occasionally throw a small vessel or keepsake box into the mix.
I generlly use sterling silver, bronze and/or copper as a primary medium and manipulate it by forging, etching, sawing, bending, filing, riveting, texturing, stamping, drilling, doming and/or enameling. I often incorporate precious and semi-precious stones as well as both new and vintage beads into my pieces. I love to create both fun, happy items and more detailed, refined works of art.
For the scarf rings and dog collars, I use vintage recycled belts and incorporate the elements above, along with vintage mother-of-pearl, Bakelite, metal and some plastic buttons to create unique accoutrements for others’ scarves and dogs.
I love the challenge of creating a better whole from individual elements which lack the strength on their own to be fully artistic. I enjoy incorporating unusual shapes, media and design concepts into my work to make the end result something unexpected and away from the norm. Each piece I make ultimately becomes a carefully crafted, one-of-a-kind artwork, and my efforts to bring a smile to others’ faces bring me great joy and help inspire me to continue my quest for knowledge and skill in the world of jewelry-making.
